Small Adventures
On one occasion we—not so quietly—snuck into the willows to a small spring pond, in hopes of capturing a glimpse of the very secretive Beaver. We observed the small beaver dam hidden in the willows and admired his hard work. Although we were unsuccessful at spotting the Furry Engineer, we were already planning our next ‘stake-out’ and what kind of snacks we might bring along.
Visitors in Down
Canada Geese are found in a variety of habitats near water and meadows where there is plenty of food and open air to stretch their wings, and our pairs find just that here on the two hundred acres of private nature preserve.
101 Springs
There are at least 101 natural—and very pristine—springs located on the House on Metolius. As the underlying aquifer is filled, water overflows onto the surface—the springs can range in size from intermittent seeps to large pools with hundreds of cubic feet emerging daily.
